There are two questions hiding inside this one, and mixing them up is why ads ship with the price crossed out by a Shop Now button.
The first is what ratio to shoot. That has a short answer. The second is where the platform's own interface sits on top of your video, and that answer changes per placement, per caption length, and occasionally per platform update.
Shoot 9:16, always
One vertical master at 1080 by 1920 is the correct source file for every UGC ad in 2026. Not because 9:16 is the best performing ratio in every placement, but because it is the only ratio you can crop down from without losing information.
A 9:16 master crops cleanly to 4:5 and 1:1. A 4:5 original cannot be turned into a full-bleed Reel without either bars or an upscale. Shooting landscape and cropping vertical is worse still: you throw away most of the frame and end up with a subject who is off centre in the crop that matters.

The safe zones, in pixels
Safe zones are the parts of the frame the platform draws its own interface over: captions, the profile row, the sound label, the engagement buttons, the call to action. Anything you place there is either covered or fighting for attention with a button.

Top: keep clear of roughly the first 270 pixels, about 14%

Combined with the 14% at the top, more than a third of a vertical ad is contested space. The part you actually own is a band in the middle, and it is smaller than most templates assume.
One caveat that matters more than the numbers themselves: TikTok states its safe zone depends on dimensions, caption length and which formats are enabled. Any fixed pixel rule you read, including the one above, is a snapshot. Check your own ad in the preview before it ships.
The one-master rule that avoids per-placement files
If you run Advantage+ or broad placements, your ad will be cropped in ways you did not choose. There is a simple way to make that safe.
Put every element that carries meaning inside a centred 1080 by 1080 square on the 1080 by 1920 canvas. The headline, the product, the face, the price, the closing card. That square is what survives the crop to feed, and it also sits clear of the Reels interface at both ends.

The mistakes that cost impressions
Bottom-thirds text. The classic broadcast lower third is exactly where TikTok puts the caption and the buttons. Move it up.
Burned-in captions at the very bottom. Same problem. Subtitles belong in the lower middle, not the true bottom.
Logos in the top left. That is where the profile picture and handle sit on most vertical placements.
A price or discount code near an edge. The one element you most need read, placed where it is most likely to be covered.
Uploading a 4:5 file to a 9:16 placement. Meta will letterbox or crop it, and either way the ad looks like it was made for somewhere else, which is its own kind of performance penalty.
Checking on a monitor. Everything is legible at 100% zoom on a 27 inch screen. The test is a phone at arm's length.
Resolution, length and file specs worth knowing
1080 by 1920 is the practical minimum for a vertical ad in 2026. TikTok technically accepts 540 by 960, but it looks like it.
MP4 or MOV, H.264, with real audio even though most viewers are muted. Silent tracks get flagged by some review systems and sound-on viewers are the ones most likely to convert.
Frame rate 30fps is fine. 60fps buys nothing for talking-head UGC and costs file size.
Shoot vertical natively. Cropping a horizontal capture to vertical loses roughly two thirds of the sensor and shows.
Why this is a production decision, not an edit decision
Every item above is cheaper to fix before the shoot than after it. If the subject was framed for a 16:9 monitor, no crop recovers a composition where the product sits at the left edge. If the on-screen text was authored at the bottom of a template, moving it up means re-rendering every variant.
The way to make it stick is to put the safe zones into the brief and the template rather than the review checklist. A frame that is correct by construction cannot be wrong on the twentieth variant.
